EQUIFAX MOVES INTO SOUTH AFRICA THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH EDS

ATLANTA, Feb. 20, 1997--Equifax today announced it had signed an agreement with Electronic Data Systems (EDS) to provide credit card processing software to the Standard Bank of South Africa.

The sale by Equifax's FBS Software is the first in South Africa but part of an accelerating global expansion. Over the past six years, Equifax has expanded the number of nations where it maintains a sales or operational presence to more than 40.

Standard Bank, headquartered in Johannesburg, is one of the largest banks in South Africa and maintains a portfolio of about 1.5 million private-label retail and bank cards. The bank now relies on EDS South Africa for management of its credit card operations and EDS, in turn, selected Equifax to provide a new, more flexible software solution for the bank's back office.

"International growth is a large part of our business strategy because we know we have the expertise and customer service capabilities to assist banks and other card issuers around the world," said Larry Towe, president of Equifax's FBS Software. "We've also made it clear how importantly we view partnerships, such as this one with EDS. Together, we will provide Standard Bank with a true state-of-the-art system."

The agreement with EDS licenses the right to use Equifax's card processing software for mainframe computers. EDS already licenses Equifax's software for use in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. EDS and Equifax plan to offer similar card processing solutions to other banks and retailers in Johannesburg and throughout South Africa.

As part of its agreement, Equifax also is developing a retail transaction subsystem for Standard Bank that will allow the institution to offer card processing services to retailers. EDS and Equifax anticipate installing the new software during the second quarter of 1997, and will convert the Standard Bank portfolio in late 1997. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"We decided to use this software because of the proven and successful track record that FBS has had with EDS in other parts of the world and the United States," commented Peter Harrington, Director, Card Processing Center, EDS Africa.

Equifax's FBS Software, headquartered in Atlanta, develops and licenses mainframe and Unix-based software for payment card processing, merchant portfolio processing and collections. Incorporated in 1986 as First Bankcard Systems, the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of Equifax Inc. in 1994. Leading financial institutions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Thailand and Turkey have turned to Equifax for expert and innovative solutions in the collections and electronic payment industries.
