EQUIFAX FIRST TO LET CONSUMERS ORDER CREDIT FILE ON INTERNET
Access also via Microsoft Network and Compuserve
Atlanta, Feb. 6, 1997 -- Equifax is the first national credit
information company to offer consumers the opportunity to
order a copy of their credit file via
the Internet. The company also announced the service is available on
Compuserve's Electronic Mall. It has been available on Microsoft Network since
August, 1995.
John T. Rougeou, president, Equifax North American Credit Services, said, "Equifax
is dedicated to making full use of technology for our customers and consumers.
This consumer Internet order form provides another service to those who prefer
to communicate with us 'on- line'."
The Equifax Internet Home Page (http://www.equifax.com) contains basic
consumer credit information, frequently asked questions and answers (FAQ), a
summary of the latest Louis Harris-Equifax Consumer Privacy Survey and an
electronic form for the consumer to order a copy of his or her credit file. For
MicroSoft Network and Compuserve users, a click on the Equifax icon links the
visitor to the credit information site and the electronic order form.
The electronic credit file order form asks for certain basic
identification information, which is encrypted via software that is downloaded
to the consumer's PC when the form is accessed. It is transmitted in encrypted
format to the Equifax Information Service Center, where the request is processed
and a copy of the consumer's credit file is sent out via U.S. Postal Service.
For those consumers who have been denied credit in the past 60 days, there
is no charge for the credit file. For consumers who have not been denied
credit, the form allows the consumer to pay a nominal fee, if applicable, by
credit card. The credit file that's mailed contains a toll-free telephone
number the consumer can call with questions about the file.
Equifax Inc. (NYSE:EFX), committed to Global Information Leadership for the
Information Age, is the leading provider of information services that help
businesses grant credit, authorize and process credit card and check
transactions and insure lives and property. Established in 1899 in Atlanta,
Equifax today employs 14,000 people throughout North and South America, the
United Kingdom and continental Europe. Revenues for the 12 months ended Dec.
31, 1996, exceeded $1.8 billion.
